Sam Askuwheteau (He who watches) Kiruk was born to Sinopa (Fox Kitten) and Samoset (He walks over much) Kiruk on 7 Feb 1938 near Browning, MT. His mother had never been off the reservation and his father had come to the reservation to live with his grandparents after his parents died of smallpox.

Sam spent most of his time, when not in school, hunting and fishing to supplement his family’s food. He liked the simplicity of the old ways but he could already see the dwindling of the tribes. The Blackfoot would adapt or become extinct, that was the way of the world. He decided he would do what he could to help his people adapt.

He was 18 when the Korean War was officially declared and in that he saw his opportunity to begin to have an impact on his people’s survival. As a soldier, even an Indian one, he would have a better chance of getting into the Bureau of Indian Affairs and from there he would have a better chance of being heard. He served his tour in Korea and upon his return he applied for and was accepted to the Bureau. After a few years he had made a name for himself and was a respected agent. It was accepted by everyone that he would continue to
climb the bureau ladder and have the ear of many important government officials.
